As David was preparing for battle against Goliath...
"Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. 'I cannot go in these,' he said to Saul, 'because I am not use to them.' So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine [Goliath]."
1 Samuel 17:38-40
David was a shepherd. He told Saul, "When a lion or bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine [Saul] will be like one of them, because he has defied one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine."
1 Samuel 17:34-37
In David's eyes, this battle with Goliath was no different than when him herding sheep. So why treat it any differently?
You would think David would have wanted some heavy duty protection to help fight this "uncircumcised Philistine," right? David did not need Saul's fancy armor, nor did he want it. For one, he clearly stated he was not used to it. But most importantly, David knew it wasn't the armor that would save him. It was the Lord.
Just because it seems like you may be up against higher levels of adversity, doesn't necessarily mean you completely neglect the tools that brought you there in the first place.
And listen, this battle with Goliath was a HUGE deal. Whoever lost would be the opposition's servants. Nobody had the courage to fight Goliath. He taunted the Israelites for 40 days, and there were no contenders.
David utilized what he knew as a shepherd to his advantage. Instead, most people think that new heights = new tactics. While this is sometimes true, this case is different. David paid less attention who he was up against, and more on who he was fighting for.
Don't try to wear somebody else's armor for a battle you were called for.
