Toward the end of David's reign as King of Israel, he sang a song to God for all the victories He saw David through. Some verses were,
"The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me...
The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness;
according to my cleanness in his sight." [2 Samuel 21:21, 25]
Righteousness: acting in a morally correct manner; correct by divine declaration
We can probably all think of one person who still holds our past mistakes over our head, or even someone we can never look at in the same way because of something they did.
How blessed are we that God does not see our flaws when He looks at us?
The Lord has dealt with me according to my divine correctness;
The Lord has rewarded me according to my divine correctness.
Some of us still think...
The Lord has dealt with me according to the way I treated my mother the last time we spoke.
The Lord has rewarded me according to my tendency to go off on people easily.
The Lord has dealt with me according to the filthiness of my mouth.
The Lord has dealt with me according to the dirtiness of my attitude.
The Lord has dealt with me according to my promiscuity.
The Lord has rewarded me according to my addiction.
The Lord has dealt with me according to how much I've lied.
I'm not gonna sit here and say sin does not matter, that we are excused of consequences of sin, and that there is no need to correct our mistakes. David sinned many times and he faced the repercussions of his sinful behavior. However, the Word clearly states that God does not see our flaws when He looks at us. Even our own earthly parents remember the mistakes we made and choose to love us. But God only sees our divine holiness inherited directly from Him.
So if God (Creator of all, all-knowing, all-powerful, mighty, transcendent, etc.) does not see our flaws when He sees us, then why do we fixate on our flaws and mistakes? If He doesn't let our flaws define our character, then why do we?
Why do we hold onto our past shameful behavior when God has already let go??
Exercise: Stand in the mirror and lock eyes with yourself.
Ignore all criticism that may arise.
Forget your mistakes and set aside your flaws.
Really try to see yourself as pure, blameless, and clean.
This may take awhile too, but really stick with it.
Once you do, you will experience an overwhelming peace. Now multiply that peace x1000. That is the peace of God that surpasses all understanding [Philippians 4:7].
